FR. ALBERT VANLEEUWENTURNS GOLDEN INWITNESSING THE WORD!


Once more during the  year the Society of the Divine Word celebrates its 100 years of missionary presence in the Philippine in August this year, Rev. Fr. Albert Van Leeuwen, SVD turned Golden on February 1, 2009 in his missionary service in the Northern Philippines particularly in the Diocese of Bangued, Abra. He however, anticipated his thanksgiving with Fr. Jerome Adritiaco, SVD, PHN Provincial Superior, SVD Confreres, Most rev. Leopoldo Jaucian, SVD, DD and Abra Clergy, former parishioners and friends in attendance on January 29 to coincide with the fiesta of Ubbog chapel community and the feast of St. Joseph Freinademetz, SVD, the Patron Saint.

Fr. Albert Van Leeuwen, SVD saw the first light on December 1, 1928 in Schiluiden, Netherlands. Of the thirteen children of Mr. Nicolas Van Leeuwen and Wilhelmina Van Leeuwen our Golden Jubilarian takes the middle position among six older three brothers and three sisters and younger three brothers and three sisters. Fr. Oscar Alunday, SVD, the homilist during the Eucharistic celebration fittingly said, Fr. Albert is indeed a “mediator.”

Fr. Albert joined the SVD Clerical Formation on May 6, 1946 at St. John Soesterberg, Holland. On September 8, 1952, the Birthday of the Society of the Divine Word known as SVD, Societas Verbi Divini in Latin, and of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he was vested during an investiture rite within a Eucharistic celebration. After two years in spiritual formation, he pronounced his First Religious Vows on September 8, 1954 in Helvoirt, Holland same place where he received his holy vestments the first time. Four years of formation in temporary vows flew very fast that on September 8, 1958 at St. Franciscus Xavierius, Teteringen, Netherlands, he pronounced his “FOREVER” and vowed to a religious missionary all his life. Two months later on November 2 he was ordained Deacon and served in that Ministry until he was ordained a priest on February 1, 1959 four months later at St. Franciscus Xavierius, Teteringen, Netherlands.

Two years after his priestly ordination in June 1961, Fr. Albert arrived in the Philippines. His first assignment was in Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, San Jose, Manabo, Abra as assistant from 1961 to 1963. From 1963 to 1966 he had his first missionary experience as a Parish Priest of Immaculate Conception Parish, and School Director of St. Mary’s High School both in Pidigan, Abra. He took home leave the first time same year 1966 and had his Nemi Renewal Course altogether. When he came back from Nemi, he went to Sallapadan, Abra as a Parish Priest of San Nicolas Parish and Director of Fr. Arnoldus High School from 1967 to 1972. In 1973 to 1978 he held the Diocesan Office known as Abra Diocesan Rural Development. Then, from 1978 to 1988 for ten solid years, he was the Parish Priest of Our Lady of Peace Parish and Director of Queen of Peace School(s) in La Paz, Abra. Another three consecutive terms assignment were spent as a Parish Priest of Our Lady of Sorrow Parish and Director of Heart of Mary High School in Dolores, Abra. His last Parish assignment was at Our Lady of the Pillar Parish in the cradle of the Society of the Divine Word Missionaries, San Isidro, Abra from 1988 to 1999. Now, in spite of his advance age, still very active in the ministry of taking care of the poor and the needy, while he resides semi-retired at the Divine Word Missionaries District House, Ubbog, Bangued, Abra.

  1. Congratulations to Fr. Albert Van Leeuwen, SVD. He has devoted much of his missionary life in Abra specially in the remotest areas. Our family remembers him very as our father was close to him. Congratulations to other SVD priests who are celebrating their golden anniversaries, too. Congrats to Fr. Dom Flores.
